Dr Who scarf problems

July 3rd, 2005

I’ve knitted about 190 rows of Newt’s Dr Who scarf so far, and have realised that it’s not quite right. I didn’t bother to do a tension square, because I thought it doesn’t really matter for a scarf, and I don’t think my tension is usually that way off anyway.

But, based on what I’ve done so far, I’ve calculated that the final length will be just short of eight feet long. Waaaaay shorter than it’s supposed to be. Partly this is due to my tension being out, and partly because I’m knitting the scarf in acrylic yarn for economic reasons(!) which means that I won’t be able to block it to size.

I did ask Newt whether he wants me to start again using bigger needles, and maybe using the pattern from season 16 which seems to be longer. He says no. But I’m very much not happy. I’m far more of a perfectionist, and whilst Mr Newt might be happy with a longish stripy scarf, I’m not.

So. I think the plan will be to carry on with this scarf as it is. Then do a proper tension square with this cheap DK yarn to work out what size needles I should be using. Then I’ll either use the pattern from season 16, or I’ll reknit the season 12 pattern, this time doubling the number of rows given. It will still probably not be exactly right, but I think it will be a lot closer. That will also give me the chance to make the colours much more accurate, as I still think the ones I’m using at the moment are far too bright.

When Mr Newt brings the camera home from work, I’ll show you all a photo.

On a brighter note, my Wendy Shimmer scarf is really coming along. I’m almost ready to start my final ball, so I suppose in a week or two, it will be finished.

Rachel, I saw some shimmer yarn in the Eastgate shop, both in your colourway and the lagoon. I think it was the lagoon as it looked like the one of the website. It is really lovely. I was sorely tempted but stuck with my order from Diannes! I am sure you’ll sort out the Dr Who scarf…at least it will be unique :)
