Signed up with the OU
I know. I’m completely mad. I’ve only been out of Uni for a month, but I’m bored and when I’m bored, I annoy Newt. So we’ve both decided that being stressed about coursework is preferable to being bored and grumpy. So in November I’ve signed up for a short OU course called “Studying Mammals”. Obviously this has little relevance to my work, so in January, I’m going to be studying “Open Mathematics”. In sort of preparation for me to eventually do my Masters, where I think I’ll need to know more about stats than I do right now. I did consider starting with the course above this, but I decided to go for the easier option while I’m getting used to OU study. And after all, it is about 13 years since I studied maths, so hopefully this will be a good refresher.
We’ve also put the house on the market today.
House Website
We’re trying to sell it privately without an estate agent, and we’re really keen to move soon, so I hope we get some interest. Our For Sale board should arrive in the next week or so.
Decorating
Mr Newt has taken a week off work, partly because it’s his birthday on Wednesday, and partly because he’s going to decorate the bedroom. Nothing fancy, we’re just going to rip off the old wallpaper and paint the walls a nice neutral shade of cream. I went to get some shade charts from B&Q and I can’t believe there are so many different shades of cream and off-white! We’ve bought some tester pots – almond white, apricot white and barley white, and I’m hoping that one will be OK for the walls and one will be OK for the woodwork.
I did have big ideas about doing some sort of design in a metallic gold on one of the walls, but I’ve gone off that, and think I’ll just hang a picture instead – much easier! And as we’re hopefully going to be moving soon, the people who move in may well want to change everything anyway.

My registration came through on Friday, so Saturday was my first shift working as a Midwife. In general I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit of a baptism of fire. My main worry was that I would end up in theatre – I hate theatre, I don’t know where things are, I’m too clumsy for that kind of environment, and everything you do has a huge audience.
I’m sure you can guess what happened. I ended up in theatre, less than three hours after the start of my shift! Fortunately I was with really lovely people that didn’t mind that I didn’t know where anything was, and all went reasonably well. I still don’t like theatre, but I don’t think that will ever change.
I am looking forward to my next shift, but it’s just really, really hard trying to get used to being qualified, whilst getting used to all the differences in paperwork, guidelines etc etc at this new hospital.

Sorry there hasn’t been an update in a while. I’ve been busy with starting work, then Newt decided to install something on the computer for work and lost all my internet and email settings! So if you read this, and I used to have your email, please drop me a line, because I’ll have lost yours now!
I also thought it was about time I mentioned our holiday in Derbyshire. We stayed in a gorgeous cottage, in the roof of a converted barn in the middle of nowhere in Derbyshire. We had pretty good weather while we were there and went to various local attractions – Bolsover Castle, Hardwick Hall, the plague village of Eyam an otter sanctuary and local villages including Bakewell. Click on the photo of me and the donkey for more pictures. It was the most gorgeous day when we went to see the donkeys – fabulous blue skies, and little pygmy donkeys – heaven! And from there, you couldn’t see another house or farm or road or anything – I want to live there.
It was our wedding anniversary while we were there, and we went out for a meal to the Devonshire Arms – gorgeous home cooked food. It was a great way to spend our anniversary, and I think we may have to make a habit of going away in September.

So I’ve started my new job. So far so good. Everyone I’ve met so far seems really lovely, the unit seems great as well. I’m on Labour Ward, which is scary at times, but I think on the whole I’m pleased to start off there, as I may as well get it over and done with, rather than working on the ward and getting myself in a real tizzy about transfering to Labour Ward. I’m doing three long days a week – and at the moment I’m really not used to it, so I’m absolutely knackered after a long day – my feet and legs hurt soooo much. But, I’ve been there before, and I know it gets better.
At the moment I’m still waiting for my registration – should come through by next week, so I’m working as a Health Care Assistant at the moment. It’s good in that it helps me find my way around, know how things are done etc etc; but I do feel useless and a bit like a spare part right now.
I’m just really relieved that I’m enjoying it, and looking forward to actually getting a pay packet at the end of the month, even if it will all go towards paying off my student loans!
