Another scarf
It’s been a while since I posted any knitting photos. I’ve been busy knitting scarves – here’s a purple and gold one made of a shimmer-type yarn and a cosmic-type yarn that I got at the Harrogate show, on 12mm (I think) needles. It’s lovely and soft and warm, and I think I prefer it to the plain shimmer scarf I’ve got.
I also made a wrap ou of Foxy yarn, but I think it will be better to take a photo of that when I’m wearing it. In addition, I’ve been working on DH’s Dr Who scarf, but it gets very boring after a while, and I need a break. So I’ve started a matinee jacket from a vintage (aka really old) pattern that I got from Ebay. I’m also trying to make some hats for the maternity unit where I work, but I tried to make on with a little bit of a lacy pattern, but I messed up, and had to rip it all back. I suppose I could have left it and most people wouldn’t have noticed, but I would always have known. So, it’s back to the matinee jacket for a while, then I’ll tackle the hat again.

I’ve been trying to upgrade to the latest version of MT for several days. First of all couldn’t ftp stuff because of our firewall (except that I didn’t know it stopped you doing this, so that took a while to sort out). Then it all seemed to work but I kept getting error messages. Finally gave up and went back to Blogger. Then thanks to the lovely people at the MT forums, re-uploaded one small (but apparently crucial file) and now all is well.
This version of MT has better spam protection built in, but it may take me a while to tweak it, so if some of your comments are rejected, I apologise – but please drop me an email so I can sort it out. I’m still undecided as to whether MT is worth all the hassle of hosting it myself, when I almost certainly don’t make use of all the functionality of it. But for now, it’s set up, it’s working – so I’m sticking with it. However we’re planning on moving webhosts soon as well, so I expect that will cause no end of hassles as well.
On a brighter note, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. I haven’t had my ‘proper’ Christmas yet, but I did get G4′s latest CD from Newt, and although I had to work on Christmas Day I had a lovely delivery and spent all shift with a really nice family, so it wasn’t so bad at all. Newt is off visiting his parents for a few days, so it’s just me and the cats for now, and they’re very grumpy because it’s too cold for them to stay out for long.

Have only just realised that I never posted this on here, but my Grandma died on the 10th December. Her funeral was yesterday. I can’t really talk about it much because I’m still far too upset about it all. She really was a wonderful person, everyone who met her said so, and I’ll miss her more than I can say.

I’m afraid I’ve been rubbish this year, and somehow Christmas has managed to sneak up on me. I also didn’t really take into account my shift patterns, and consequently it’s now the 20th of December, and I’ve done absolutely nothing.
So, as it’s now too late to send Christmas cards, and the White Rose Shopping Centre was hell on earth when I popped in yesterday in a last minute panic, I’d like to apologise to everyone I should have sent Christmas cards to, and promise to try harder next year!
I hope you all have a really, really wonderful Christmas, get whatever lovely pressies you’re hoping for, and for those of you that get a well earned break at this time of year, I hope you get the chance to relax and enjoy it.
I shall be spending the day at home with Newt, moaning that I have to go to work in the evening, and will then spend the night trying desparately to stay awake, while Newt stays home, drinks beer and plays on the computer. We’ll have a proper family Christmas in January, so technically, I’ve got loads of time to get things sorted.

Haven’t really been up to much, other than trudging up and down the M62 for the past week or so. To work, to a friends wedding and to visit parents.
My Grandma has now been moved to a different hospital. Apparently she needs a skin graft on the broken leg, and so has been sent to a unit that has a specialist plastic surgery department. Unfortunately this is further away from home, making visiting by my parents more difficult, and completely impossible for virtually anyone else. Even more unfortunately, once she got there she started with a cold. I just knew that things would only go downhill from there. She now has bilateral pneumonia, bilaterial fractured ribs (probably from the fall, but also possibly from a previous fall) and congestive heart failure. Oh, and her kidneys aren’t 100% either. Not so great really.
I went to see her yesterday, and although she wasn’t good at all, she was better than I had imagined from reports from parents and nurses. She was still pink, and reasonably stable on oxygen. She’s still talking and perfectly coherant, although she was very tired by the time we left. She’s not eating (understandably now) so they’ve got her on those meal replacement drinks, but she (also understandably) doesn’t like those. She was also in quite a bit of pain, so I hope that they can manage to make her more comfortable.
The hospital staff have been absolutely brilliant. I called up and the nurses were really, really helpful and gave me the contact details for the doctor, who then called me at home in the evening to update me on what was happening. He was lovely. Can’t praise them highly enough. Apparently the next few days will be critical to see if she responds to the treatment for the pneumonia. Fingers crossed.
My Grandma has never really been ill, and is a very feisty, independent person. Doesn’t like to be dependent on anyone, and is more than capable of looking after herself under normal circumstances. The reason she’s had a few falls is not because she’s getting a bit old and doddery, but because she just won’t slow down! She runs everywhere and on more than one occasion has fallen on the steps in the garden because she was racing to get her washing in because it was raining! She still bakes every week, and makes the most gorgeous ‘flat jam’ and butterfly buns. She’s generous to a fault, and loves going out to the local pub for lunch. She’s always knitted, all her life, and she originally taught me to knit when I was very little, and when I started knitting again recently, I was amazed what I remembered from so long ago.
I love my Grandma so much, and I can’t bear to think that I might lose her now because of a stupid accident. At the same time, I can’t bear to think that she’s in pain and suffering. Here’s hoping the antibiotics do their job and she’s back to normal soon.

I haven’t been around recently because I’ve been on nights, and the drive home is a nightmare – took two hours the other day, whereas when I’m on days it’s only half an hour. Stupid lazy businessmen – why can’t they get the train? I can’t get the train because it doesn’t run at the ridiculous times I need to be at work, but there’s no way I’d drive into Leeds for 9am if I didn’t have to to go home and sleep!
Other than that – I went to work’s Christmas do on Wednesday, which was great, and I’m off to a wedding on Saturday, and then another Christmas do on Tuesday. Newt and I are also off to the cinema tonight to see Harry Potter, and we’ll probably also eat out as well, because it’s been a while since we’ve done that.
Last weekend I went to the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate and met up with a few BB friends. I did lots of fondling of yarn, but managed to get away with just buying some shimmer and fur yarn for a scarf (really quick to make – pics will follow soon) and some baby alpaca yarn for yet another scarf – it’s the softest thing imaginable, but I can’t start it until Newt’s Dr Who scarf is finished.
My Grandma is in hospital at the moment. She broke her leg badly a couple of weeks ago and had to have it pinned and plated (or whatever it is they do). But now she’s been moved to another hospital for a skin graft (not sure why….), but at the moment she can’t have that done because she’s having a blood transfusion (again, not sure why….). I went to see her about a week ago, and she seemed pretty well, but she’s not eating well because she doesn’t really like the food, or forgets to fill her menu card in etc etc, and not eating isn’t really helping the healing process. Sadly this means that she’s going to miss my graduation – again! Well, I’ve told her that I’m not going back to Uni again – she’ll just have to settle for the DVD version! Hopefully she’ll be out for Christmas, although they’re talking about sending her to some kind of intermediary rehab-type ward first, but I’ve no idea when this will be.
