Sims 2
Well it was my birthday yesterday, and Newt bought me the Sims 2. What can I say, except – see you all in 6 months time!

Shamelessly copied from WhizGidget’s blog (but I’ve seen it on a couple of other blogs too).
Four jobs I have had in my life:
1. Clerk at video rentals store – my first proper job. Also involved a lot of babysitting for the owner.
2. Barmaid – loved this job. Would have carried on doing it forever if it paid better and didn’t make my feet hurt so much
3. Information manager – for the Department of Health. I did stuff with data and statistics and things like that.
4. Midwife – my current job. Scary, but wonderful.
Four movies I would watch over and over again:
1. Mr Holland’s Opus
2. Pretty Woman
3. An Officer and a Gentleman
4. Love Actually
Four places I have lived:
1. Rochdale, Lancashire
2. Leeds, Yorkshire
3. Oldham, Lancashire
4. Errm, that’s it. I haven’t lived anywhere else.
Four TV shows I love to watch:
1. Desperate Housewives
2. Friends
3. Frasier
4. Red Dwarf
Four places I have been on vacation:
1. Marmaris, Turkey
2. Corfu, Greece
3. Val d’Isere, France
4. Cotswolds, England
and loads of other places in England, but not many other places abroad.
Four websites I visit daily:
1. BBC News
2. Gmail
3. Bulletin boards (various ones)
4. Blogs (various ones)
Four of my favourite foods:
1. Pizza – either mushroom or four cheese
2. Crisps – especially lightly salted kettle chips
3. M&S vegetable kievs with potato and swede mash
4. Noodles
Four places I’d rather be right now
1. Somewhere warm (not hot, just warm) – it’s freezing here today, and even though the fire is on, I’m still cold
2. Our new house that we’re moving to in two weeks time
3. On holiday – maybe somewhere like Greece or Turkey
4. In a restaurant, enjoying a meal that someone else has cooked for me
Comments on my blog
Since moving to the latest version of Movable Type, the situation with spam has improved. The inbuilt spam plugins seem to catch everything so that nothing appears on site, but they also mean at the moment that even real comments get moderated. So. I’ve tweaked the settings a little bit. It now requires a valid email address before you can comment, and if you have a Typekey registration (see the above link) you can put that in, then once I’ve approved one comment, any further comments will automatically get approved. But you don’t necessarily need one to comment. I’m really annoyed with the spammers, I want to make it impossible for them to get through, without making it too hard for genuine comments to get through. But, because I think more and more blogs will probably start using TypeKey, I thought I’d give it a go. If it makes things too tricky, then I’ll go back to how things were.

I’m back after our very belated family Christmas. Thursday was Christmas Eve, and we entertained my parents at our new place. Had drinks and nibbles, played cards and generally had a pleasant evening. Then on Friday, we went over to my parents’ house for Christmas Day. Lovely traditional Christmas lunch, and I got some great presents – a hairdryer and straighteners – yay! Some DVDs and stuff from Lush. We then played Settlers (which Newt and I had bought as a sort of joint Christmas present for everyone) and Millionaire. Settlers was very popular, and gained even more in popularity the following day when we played again and my mum won!
On the Saturday, I took Newt on the bus to discover the joys of Oldham. He was very impressed with the library, although the choice of nice coffee places leaves a lot to be desired. Then off to the pub for lunch and then we had a night in front of the TV.
All in all, a lovely weekend, although it was very, very strange being in the new house (that I’m trying really hard not to call ‘My Grandma’s house’). And it was very strange and sad not to have my Grandma around. We started to get used to the house, and trying to work out where we can put things, but in short, I think we’ve got a lot of sorting out to do in the next few months.
But, for the moment, life is back to normal in Leeds. I’m working tomorrow, and we’ve got a ton of packing to do.

Well, I survived yesterday. That’s about as much as can be said about it. I picked the van up at about 8:30am, and it was rather large, and rather less visibility than I’m used to. Only a Transit type thing – but big for me. Anyway, got it home OK, and even managed (somehow) to parallel park it outside the house. Bearing in mind I’ve never really driven anything bigger than my Fabia, I didn’t think this was bad. Took absolutely ages to load it, but then it did hold a LOT of stuff. I was absolutely horrified to discover just how much junk Mr Newt has. A seriously scary amount of stuff. And I thought I was bad.
Then the scary bit. I had to drive it over to Manchester. The M62 was not nice at all yesterday. It was raining, and they had the strong winds and fog warning signs up. Great. I could really feel the wind in the van – being higher than a normal car, and it was just so much less responsive than my car it felt really, really strange. Managed to get there in one piece and unloaded all our stuff into the garage and various rooms in the house. My dad nearly had a heart attack – partly from the shock of seeing how much stuff we have, and partly from lifting boxes that are too heavy and refusing to admit that he’s getting on a bit!
Then, back to Leeds for another load. Back to Manchester in rush hour traffic, and unload another lot of stuff. Then pub tea with mum and dad before the drive home. Eventually managed to find the petrol cap on the van and returned it at about 9pm. I’ve never been so glad to be driving my little car before! We’ve still got a fair amount of big-ish stuff to move though, so I may have to do it all again in a month’s time!

Well, we start the first chapter of our ‘moving to Oldham’ adventure tomorrow. We’re taking over the first batch of stuff. I really never knew we had so much junk! I’ve bought boxes from Ikea, liberated them from work, but today I may have taken it a step too far when I bought a ‘home movers’ pack of boxes, bubble wrap, tape and tissue paper from a big storage place. I’ve now spent more money on boxes than on the removal van. Will Mr Newt be happy about this? Very unlikely. I’ve bought so many boxes I can’t even lift them out of the car. Ooops. Cats will probably like it though.
We’re also having ‘Christmas’ at the end of this week, and so I still need to wrap Christmas presents – that’s my next job today. I’ve got a lovely week off from work, and I intend to enjoy it as much as I can – catch up with friends and OU stuff, relax, sleep late, knit and generally be happy knowing that I don’t have to get up at 5:30am and scrape ice off the car. Yay!!!
