Parsnip Puree

October 30th, 2007

I went a bit bonkers last night while I was making tea, and made up a LOT of parsnip puree.  I realised that I had a big bag of parsnips, and after I’d used a couple in my lentil bolognese, for me and Veggie Daddy, I thought I’d get practising and make some purees.

I learned:

  • parsnip takes longer than you’d think to cook to baby consistency
  • parsnip does not smell so great when cooked to baby consistency
  • parsnip without any seasoning is really, really sweet
  • parsnip and apple together is really quite nice

So I now have a couple of freezer bags full of teeny tiny ice cube size portions of baby food, as well as a lot of mini pots from Mothercare full of the stuff (I feel quite Domestic Goddess-y actually!).  The little pots from Mothercare seem quite useful because I bet they’ll be good for taking food out and about.  Although I’m sure it won’t be long before I need the larger size.

Welcome to Veggie Baby

October 29th, 2007

Welcome to my new blog. I’m really excited about this new venture. I’ve decided to start this blog to chart our progress in weaning on a vegetarian diet. I think I’ve finally found a theme I’m happy with, and the time to start weaning is fast approaching.

So far, I’m exclusively breastfeeding, as recommended by the UK Department of Health, and the World Health Organisation, for the first six months. I plan to carry on breastfeeding until Evie decides she doesn’t want to any more – hopefully that will be when she’s at least 12 months old, because to be honest, I don’t think I can be bothered messing around with formula!

But from 6 months, I’ll be beginning to introduce solids – well, semi solid mushes!  I think we’re going to start with baby rice, and then move on to basic vegetable and fruit purees.  I still have stuff to do before I’m ready though.  I’ve bought my high chair – but I still need to assemble it, and I need to buy wipe clean table cloths, because I’m sure I’m going to need those.  Oh, and I have a new chest freezer arriving on Thursday (I do have a freezer, but it’s part of the fridge-freezer and it’s only little) – not just for baby food, because that would be crazy, even for me – but because I plan on cooking and freezing a lot more meals for me and DH as well.  And cakes.

So, I’m kind of, almost ready.  I hope you’ll enjoy joining us on this little adventure.

If you thought Teletubbies was bonkers….

October 18th, 2007

then do NOT watch ‘In the Night Garden‘!

Newt turned this on by accident one day when he was looking after a grumpy baby. She’s already a little telly addict, and I don’t really know how that happened, because I don’t have the TV on at all during the day unless I’m feeding her (I have to have it on then because otherwise I get bored), but whenever she can she stares at the screen. Makes me feel very guilty.

But she absolutely loves this programme, and I thought she was really too young to be able to watch properly but she sat on my knee for about 10 minutes yesterday watching it and bouncing up and down and flapping her arms with excitement!

I’d love to tell you what it’s about, but to be honest I haven’t got a clue. There’s a blue character called Iggle Piggle, and I think it may be the story of his dreams, or possibly the story of a little boys dreams, or none of the above. There’s Upsy Daisy, a tiny family of wooden people called the Pontipines, three things called Tomblyboos, a train thing called a Ninky Nonk and a Zepplin called the Pinky Ponk. And Makka Pakka, but I really don’t have a clue what he is.

All I can say is that under no circumstances should you attempt to watch this whilst under the influence of mind altering drugs.

Been knitting

October 17th, 2007

I’ve been knitting stuff for my gorgeous girl. Actually, most of this is stuff that I finished a while back and have only just got round to putting together and sewing buttons on. I’ve even bought buttons three times for one of the cardigans.

So here they are:

Cable cardigan

A cable cardigan from a Sirdar pattern, knitted in Tiny Tots DK by Sirdar. It’s the first time I’ve ever knitted cables – and they were great fun, I now want to do Chaos from Knitty. The buttons are rather unevenly spaced, even though I thought I’d counted right, but never mind.

Matinee jacket

A matinee jacket from a vintage pattern, using some non-brand pearl DK. You can’t really tell from the photo, but the yarn has a pearly strand running through it. This one actually fits Evie now.

Bolero Jacket

A bolero jacket from a Sirdar pattern using Sirdar Snuggly Pearls DK. I’ve also knitted her a little hat in this yarn.

Apologies as usual for the useless photos. I took them at night and I think that’s part of the problem. And maybe my Turkish rug wasn’t the best background.

I’ve also made her a hat in Sublime yarn from the new pattern book for babies, but I haven’t got round to taking a photo of that yet. And I’m currently making her a little hooded jumper in a variegated yarn that I think is by Jarol, but I think I’ve now lost the ball band. Oops.

Christening shopping

October 4th, 2007

I’m so excited! I’ve just been shopping for Evie’s Christening. I’ve ordered her cake, and bought her Christening dress.

Her cake is coming from Cake Heaven, and the cake we’re having is much like this one, but without the hearts and writing. It’s gorgeous and pink and girly. It was originally done as a wedding cake apparently, but I love it, and I didn’t really want something with cutesy teddy bears or anything like that. I’m getting the bottom tier in plain sponge, and the top tier in chocolate, because I don’t like fruit cake, and I’m determined to eat some of this cake – unlike my wedding cake which was all fruit so I can’t even tell you whether it was nice or not!

Her dress is really lovely too – not too frilly, because I didn’t want anything too fancy, and it isn’t a really long gown because I wanted something that she might possibly be able to wear again. I’m really, really happy with the dress I found. It’s beautiful (well, I think so anyway), and I think she’ll also be able to wear it at Christmas as well. And Newt will be thrilled, because for once it isn’t pink!
