We have teeth!

December 31st, 2007

Evie’s biggest Christmas present was teeth!!  On Christmas Eve, my MIL asked me if she was teething, I gave my stock reply that I didn’t really know, and stuck my fingers in her mouth, expecting as usual, just to find gumminess.  But instead there were sharp bits!  Veggie Daddy then informed me “Oh yes, I noticed that yesterday.”  But you didn’t tell me!!!!  What!!  My daughter has teeth – this is huge!  Turns out he wasn’t sure, so he didn’t bother mentioning it.  Men.

I still haven’t seen the teeth properly because every time I try to look she sticks her tongue out.  So no chance of a photo either.  Fortunately she hasn’t tried to use them on me yet, but I’m not looking forward to that day.

I feel bad though because I hadn’t even noticed that she was teething, but I now think that maybe her ‘cold’ of a few days ago wasn’t actually a cold, but was just a runny nose from teething, because she didn’t have any other cold symptoms – which I thought was a little odd at the time, but didn’t give it too much thought.  Anyway, I’m just glad it didn’t seem to cause her too much distress.

LibraryThing

December 31st, 2007

I’ve just discovered LibraryThing (well actually that’s not true, I found it ages ago, but I’ve just started playing with it properly).  It lets you catalogue all your books, but it does a lot more than that.  You can assign ‘tags’ to your books, and thereby customise it to be used however you want.  For example, I use the tag ‘library’ to indicate that I borrowed a book from the library rather than bought it; the tag ‘owned’ would indicate that I do own a book.  ‘Read’ and ‘not yet read’ should be fairly obvious, and then I also usually add something to indicate what kind of book it is – fiction, non fiction etc and the genre.

You can then look at other users who’ve read the same books as you, or used the same tags.  You can join groups, and there are forums as well.  I’ve put a LibraryThing widget in the right had sidebar, but there are other widgets too that I’ll be playing around with.  If you try it out, and you’re looking for me, my user name is LittleRach.

Merry Christmas

December 27th, 2007

Merry Christmas everyone!! I hope you all had a great time. I think that the Veggie Baby enjoyed her first Christmas. Here’s her advent calender (well, one of them), you get a different little statue each day to make up the nativity scene.

The amount of presents we had was absolutely ridiculous!

In total she got (wait for it)…

  • A coathanger personalised with her name
  • A Wobble Toddle Ride (that’s too big for her really)
  • Some stacking cups
  • An activity frog
  • An activity elephant
  • A Rainmaker (she loves this)
  • A Taggies blanket
  • Some keys that play tunes and sounds
  • A Kipper book with a toy Kipper and blanket
  • Two wooden jigsaws
  • Wooden blocks in a trolley
  • Book – That’s not my penguin
  • Book – Twinkle the Fairy
  • Submarine for her bath
  • Some fish with a net for her bath
  • Finger puppets (OK, so I guess they’re more for me to play with)
  • A Fuzzy Felt book
  • Robeez bootees like Ugg boots (kind of)
  • Book – Baby’s First Christmas

Christmas Dinner

It was also my first time cooking Christmas dinner, my mum made a chicken and pigs in blankets for the non-veggie people, and I did a Quorn roast and all the veggies. Although I did need help with roast potatoes. For lunch we had leek and potato soup, and so Veggie Baby had Leek, Potato and Pea puree from the Annabel Karmel book. For dinner I made sprouts, peas, mashed and roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, so Veggie Baby had parsnips, swede and carrot (because this was the closest thing I had in the freezer and she couldn’t have our veggies because I’d cooked them with salt). For pudding, she had prune and apple puree with yogurt, because this was the closest thing to Christmas pudding I could think of. Although we didn’t manage to have Christmas pudding because by the time I remembered to put it on, and had a hob free it wouldn’t have been ready until midnight! So I think we’ll have it on New Year’s Eve. On the whole, I was really pleased with how it went, and it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought it was going to be, although i didn’t actually sit down properly until 9pm, so I was a little tired on Boxing Day.

There are loads more photos in the Christmas album in Gallery. We also took some video footage, so we’ll have to work out how to get that up on You Tube or something, so that you can see Evie opening her presents.

She’s had a cold

December 22nd, 2007

Aaaarrgghhhhhh!! Just as I thought we were getting there with sleeping through the night, poor Evie gets her first cold. It hasn’t been too bad, but bad enough to affect her sleeping, poor poppet. She also hates having her nose wiped, which isn’t helping things! But because her sleeping has been affected, so has our routine, so it’s all been a bit chaotic here.

I think she’s over the worst of it now, but wouldn’t you know it – I woke up with a sore throat this morning! Great, just in time for Christmas.

I’ve got a bit of cooking done, I made some raspberry puree, which is too tart for her on it’s own, so I think I’ll end up mixing that with some apple to add sweetness. I also made some apple and blackberry crumble – with the crumble being a broken up Weetabix.

Evie eating blueberries

Still having a few problems with the photos, but here’s one of Evie in her high chair, eating blueberries for you to be getting on with!

She slept through!

December 13th, 2007

Evie slept through last night from 7:30pm to 8:30am (she takes after her mummy and she loves her bed!).  I’m trying not to get too excited though because we’ve been here before.  She slept through – 12 hours – from about 10 to 16 weeks, and then decided to wake up again at night.  Recently she’s been up once or twice usually, but on a few horrendous nights, she’s been up every 3 hours – not great.  I can’t complain really because when she does get up at night, it’s just a quick feed and nappy change, and then straight back to sleep.

But last night was truly glorious!  She gurgled briefly at about 11pm, 1am and 4am, but then went straight back to sleep.  In fact, Veggie Daddy actually had to wake her up at 8:30 because she was still asleep!  My boobies didn’t like it though – they felt as though they were about to burst by the time she finally fed.

So fingers crossed for another good night tonight.

Plum Baby Porridge

December 4th, 2007

At the Trafford Centre, they have a really big Boots store, and so I always go and have a look at the baby food section. Lots of it is your usual stuff, and is surprisingly full of sugar, but they do often have some nice stuff. I picked up some Plum Baby Cereals. I got the Four Grain Porridge with Plum and Banana, and the plain Four Grain Porridge. They’ve got no added sugar in them, and they contain Quinoa, which is apparently a ‘superfood’, because it’s a complete protein – pretty rare in cereals (although according to Wiki, Quinoa is a pseudocereal). I have bought some plain Quinoa from the supermarket, but it’s languishing on the shelf at the moment because I don’t really know what to do with it. So I thought the cereals might be worth a try.

So, this morning, I tried the Porridge with Plum and Banana. When will I learn to trust myself? I made it up according to the instructions on the packet. “Mix 4tblsp cereal with 100ml of baby’s usual milk and 100ml water”. This sounded like a lot, but I thought they should know. Wrong. It tasted of nothing and was the consistency of skimmed milk by the time I’d finished. So I had to chuck it, there was no way Veggie Baby could have eaten it. Plus, there was WAY too much there for her. So I’m pretty annoyed because that meant I had to chuck away 100ml of breast milk, and I hate expressing, so that’s a big waste. Next time, I’m going to use half the amount of cereal, start with 50ml EBM (expressed breast milk), and see if I need to add any more, and if I do, I’ll add extra EBM because that’s fairly watery anyway, yet far more nutritious.
